I love the sociology of people sometimes. I always tell my friends, next time you're at a concert or presentation, or event or anything with an audience, listen for the Brave One to START an applause, and then the Brave One to STOP an applause. An applause will never happen without someone brave enough to start it, and an applause will theoretically continue to go until someone is brave enough to stop applauding (see those 8+ minute long ovations). Standing ovations are even more of a bold courage, as someone has to be extra brave or moved to STAND for their applause and then maintain that confidence for others to also join suit. Because conformity starts with a leader, and people want to fit in, these scenarios will almost always occur (barring the person being foolishly out of sync with the moment in a rude gesture).
