I experienced something like this with languages. I am fluent in English and Dutch. Once someone sent me a brochure about the Netherlands with an English text superimposed on the photographs. I found it really hard to read the English text as the picture behind it screamed out " the Netherlands" and my brain expected Dutch. It was like someone scraping wet polystrene across a pane of glass. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this with languages? The Dutch word "Stroop" means " syrup" in English, so a good word for a medium that slows you down!
